The Colorado
Springs Sports Corporation's Youth Scholarship Program provides
opportunities for at-promise and economically disadvantaged
children in the Pikes Peak region to participate in summer sports
camps or season-long sports programs at a minimal cost to the
participants and their families. Program participants are able
to choose from different youth organizations that offer a wide
range of sports options.
Beginning
in 2001, the Sports Corporation began placing a greater emphasis
on season-long sport programs, as opposed to offering scholarships
primarily to week-long camps. By doing so, the Sports Corporation
is providing opportunities for children to participate in a
sport for an extended period of time and assisting them in gaining
greater exposure to their chosen sport.
Since its inception in 1998, the Sports
Corporation's Youth Scholarship Program has helped send
more than 2,500 local at-promise boys and girls to summer sport
camps and season-long programs. Organizations such as the Police
Athletic League, area YMCAs, the City of Colorado Springs Parks
and Recreation Department, the U.S. Air Force Academy and
Colorado College are among the many
local entities that have participated in the program. In 2005,
the Sports Corporation reached over 300 area youth, bringing the
program's total to more than 2,500 children who have received
scholarships.
The goal of the Sports
Corporation's Youth Scholarship Program is to reach as many
area at-promise and needy children as possible - children who,
without the support of a scholarship, might not otherwise have
an opportunity to participate in a sports program.
